The painful hip in childhood

Written by László Ilona

Limping is a common reason for children to present to orthopeadic consultation. A proportion will have a preceding history of injury, but often this is absent. The main concerns are not to miss serious pathology. Potentially serious diseases include Perthes’disease, slipped femoral capital epyphisis, primary and metastatic bone tumors, bone or joint sepsis and specific diseases such as „irritable hip” in trasient and toxic sinovitis. We have therefore examined the problem of atraumatic limping with a view to establishing the pathology to be considered and to determine the method of asessment and elaborated an algoritm for reducing admissions from this condition with particular reference to painful hips.
