In the last decades, scientific research has revealed that several synthetic chemical substances, pollutants and certain plant derived substances generate significant harmful effects on human health by disturbing the function of the endocrine system and on the environment, respectively. Endocrine Disruptive Chemicals (EDC) interfere with the function of the nuclear receptors, which are transcription factors and can be found in the cytosol and the nucleus. The effect of the endocrine disruptive xenobiotics is very complex. They may intervene at different levels of the nuclear receptor ligand, interacting and thus modifying the normal hormone function responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body and controlling processes of development.
